John Hughes is a prominent visual artist, lifelong educator, and the Hon. Chairman of the East Kent Art Society (EKAS).
As a founding member of the acclaimed MAHL art collective, John has served as the group’s guiding presence since its inception in 2012, helping shape the contemporary art dialogue across Southeast England.
Working skillfully in oil, watercolor, and pastel, John’s practice captures the raw, evocative beauty of regional landscapes. His work often highlights dramatic local structures and coastal geography, ranging from detailed architectural observations to sweeping vistas of the Kent shoreline.
After completing his Fine Art degree in 1970, John spent decades leading formal art departments before transitioning his focus entirely to adult education and his personal studio practice. His work is regularly exhibited in commercial galleries and prominent art venues across Canterbury, Margate, and Ramsgate and featured at the RA Summer Exhibition. Also with the RBA, the Pastel Society and the Society of Landscape Painters, all at the Mall Gallery.
For the MAHL 2026 showcase, John returns to the collective’s roots at The Horsebridge in Whitstable, exhibiting alongside fellow regional artists to celebrate the evolution of the East Kent creative coast.
